Planning Your Session
Newborn shoots can take place when your baby is 3-10 days old in the SRP home studio, or in your own home. Once a decision is made on where you would like your newborn session to take place, we can begin planning your session.
In home newborn shoots are very much "lifestyle" in nature. Although I do not bring any props, I do bring a few wraps and often use little props I may see lying around your home. I use natural light as much as possible and strive to capture your family in their natural surroundings. These shoots are less posed than in the studio and baby is mostly wrapped for photos. If you would like to see an example of an in home lifestyle shoot, please click here.
Upon request, I will start a private Pinterest board where we can collaborate on clothing ideas, props, photo ideas and other elements of your newborn photo session. Please follow me on Pinterest under Sarah Renee Photography so I can begin our secret board. We will narrow your selections down to the following:
Various family and newborn poses (sibling poses if applicable)
A day or two before your session I will email you so that we can go over any last minute details, but here are a few helpful tips for styling and preparing you and your newborn for your shoot!
Moms: Bring a loose-fitting tank top, in a neutral color and simple design – I want to keep the focus on you and your baby! Please do not wear nail polish. Rest assured, I aim to photograph using flattering angles and light to bring out the natural beauty in your family.
Dads: If you prefer not to be shirtless, I ask that you bring a tight fitting v-neck t-shirt to wear with a good pair of jeans. Again, a neutral color shirt looks best.
Sister(s): I provide a wrap that will act as the perfect top or you can bring a snug-fitting tank in a neutral color. I ask that girls’ hair be natural (or in braids) and free of bows, headbands, etc. Just as with mom, no nail polish please.
Brother(s): Please dress the same way as Dad - a good pair of jeans and shirtless are preferred or a tight-fitting neutral colored t-shirt.
Day of Your Session
Your baby is the star of this session, so it is critical to prepare! Please feed your baby 2-3 hours before the shoot and plan on feeding him/her as soon as you get to the studio. Try to keep your baby awake for a few hours before the shoot. Keeping your baby awake before the shoot will ensure those sleepy newborn pictures! Many parents arrive to the session saying, "Baby has been sleeping all morning, but trust me, he sleeps SO good this time of day!" only to have the baby wake up as soon as the session begins.
Newborn photo sessions last between 2-3 hours, sometimes longer if the baby is a light sleeper or is hungry. The easiest way to ensure a sleepy baby is for you to nurse/bottlefeed off and on. If you can, bring the bendable soothie pacifier the hospital gave you. Even if you haven't used one, a pacifier really helps for the 2 hours that I'm posing him/her.
The Studio (not applicable to in home lifestyle sessions)
It will be at least 80 degrees in the studio – please dress for warm temperatures.
Please feel free to bring any family heirlooms, hats, and/or outfits that you would like to have your baby photographed in. I have a plethora of wraps, hats, and blankets. There is an abundance of options to choose from in the studio!
I keep plenty of wipes and newborn diapers in the studio.
If siblings will be joining you for the session, I have a DVD player, Apple TV, books, and toys as well as organic snacks on hand. Feel free to bring a favorite movie or two to help them pass the time! Please take a few moments to chat with any siblings about the session so (s)he feels prepared.
It is my hope that you come to the studio feeling comfortable and at home. I am truly honored to be able to document this incredible time in your lives and look forward to getting to know you and your sweet baby!
